ENDODONTICS

Endodontic treatment or root canal treatment is a dental procedure aimed at saving a tooth that has been severely affected by infection or inflammation within the pulp, the innermost part of the tooth containing nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue.

This procedure becomes necessary when the pulp becomes infected due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures on the tooth, or trauma.  This infection can cause severe pain, swelling, and abscesses if left untreated.

During the treatment, your dentist will remove the infected or inflamed pulp, clean and disinfect the inside of the tooth, and then seal it with a filling to prevent further infection.  Modern techniques and tools have made this procedure comfortable and efficient, often completed in one appointment.

Endodontic treatment not only relieves pain but also preserves the natural tooth, allowing continued function and appearance.  Saving your natural tooth through endodontic therapy is often the preferred option compared to tooth extraction, as it maintains the natural smile and prevents adjacent teeth from shifting out of place.

The treatment itself is usually completely painless.  Occasionally there is mild discomfort following the procedure which can be managed with paracetamol or ibuprofen.

Teeth that have undergone endodontic treatment, are more likely to fracture, so will need to be carefully restored with either a new filling or a crown for the best long-term outcome.
